Scotch Doubles

Pool League Information > Leagues
Here is a lengthly post from NAPA on Scotch Doubles effective  today Oct 29, 2020.  Items #1-5 are available now.  Item #6 will be available Jan 1, 2021.  You can read it all but to summarize:
1.  It is now an official NAPA Game Format.
2.  Each match will now count towards your NRP to reduce  your entry fees at NAPA Supershooters.
3.  You can now put in a sub "on the fly".  BEFORE you  enter the match, Just select "sub out" on the player that needs to have a sub,  and select "sub in" on the player that will replace him for THAT MATCH from the dropdown menu.  A  couple of things to remember:  a) the team handicap will NOT change with a  sub.  b) a player that you select will be from a list that will be  generated for you and will contain only those players with a handicap equal to  or less than the player you are replacing.  If you do not need a sub just  select ENTER as you usually do.
4.  Can now play matches in the future, in the past, or  current.  No more paper!
5.  New skill level formula for Scotch Doubles and will  also be used in handicap audits.
6.  At any NAPA tournament your skill level will now change  AFTER EVERY MATCH.  This will be in effect on Jan 1, 2021.
Not mentioned here, but since league nights are shorter with  Scotch Doubles you can now do double play!  This means you can play   8  ball and 9 ball, 8 ball and 10 ball, 8 ball and fast 8, 9 ball and 10  ball, 9  ball and fast 8, or 10 ball and fast 8.
Also not mentioned is the team handicap is left up to the League Operator and players.  Usually the team handicap is 179.
NAPA Announcement from Oct 29, 2020
ANNUAL MAJOR  ANNOUNCEMENT
As  many of our veteran League Operators know, every year around this time NAPA HQ  makes an annual announcement of new features to NAPA for the upcoming new  seasons. Every year we spend all summer conjuring up new updates to make NAPA  better. It’s our never ending quest to continue building the best pool league  possible for our players.  This  year is no different. And so...below are the cool updates that will either be  starting TODAY or  be starting January 1st, 2021. We hope you will join us in embracing these new  and exciting updates.

SCOTCH DOUBLES  3.0
Scotch Doubles has become one of our most popular formats  over  the last two and a half years. Our players love the format. It is growing  every  week in our league and we strongly encourage you to give it a try if you  have  not started playing it yet. It's a ton of fun for everyone.  Starting  today, NAPA Scotch Doubles is now considered an Official NAPA Game  Format.
Scotch Doubles &  the NAPA NRP
Starting  TODAY, all NAPA Scotch Doubles matches that a player plays will count towards  their NAPA NRP as a full point, just like their regular league  matches.
If  you have forgotten how important the NAPA NRP is, be sure to read up on it on  our main website: https://www.napaleagues.com/nrp.php
Scotch Doubles  Subbing Players
Starting  today, when you log into the Scotch Doubles scorekeeping app you can now sub  players "on the fly". For each team member on a team their name is presented to  you in a pull down menu (see screen shots). If you need to sub a player out for  a match, simply select the player that you need to "sub out" and replace them with the player  you want to "sub in".
NOTICE: In the  Substitution pull down menus you will only be presented with local players  of equal  or lesser skill level than the player you are  subbing for as per the NAPA Scotch Doubles rules!
Don't  need to sub a player at all for either team? Simply click on the Submit button  at the bottom without making any selection and it will keep the same  players.
NOTE: Subbing a player  does NOT change  the team skill level. Team skill levels are already determined in advance of  your matches. Even though the player you are "subbing in" might be lower in skill level,  the team skill level stays the same. After a Scotch Doubles team has played a  match with a sub, the team skill level will still gyrate based on the NAPA  Scotch Doubles formula and when the original player returns the team skill level  will still remain at it's current level. In short, subbing a player  does NOT alter  a team's skill level. If you are PERMANENTLY replacing a  player on a team, that WILL change the team  skill level.
Permanently  replacing a player on a Scotch Doubles team, as per the Official NAPA Scotch  Doubles Rules (#1.5), must be done through NAPA HQ.
NOTE: When a player subs  for another player in Scotch Doubles, the player who is acting as the sub gets  the NRP credit for the match played, not the player who had to miss the  match.
Scotch Doubles Play  Future Matches
NAPA  Scotch Doubles now allows you to play matches in the future. At the login  screen  you can now select Regular Match, Makeup Match, or Future  Match.
Regular  Match is simply a match that you will be playing  on  its scheduled date.
Makeup  Match is simply a match that you are having to  play  AFTER its regular scheduled date.
Future  Match is simply a match that is normally scheduled  in the future that you might need to play in advance due to scheduling issues  or  prior planned events.
Scotch Doubles &  The Geek Stuff
We  have hunkered down into the GEEK tank and we have invented a second skill level  formula into our system. The formula is called the SD Factor.  The SD Factor shows us a skill level "gyration margin" of a player from every  Scotch Doubles match they have played alongside a teammate. This formula is  then  incorporated alongside their Regular NAPA Skill Level in the NAPA main  database  regardless if they have ever played a regular NAPA match or not and  returns to  us an incredibly accurate and balanced skill level margin for these  players.
We  have put this SD Factor to the test on numerous players from different regions,  and we are satisfied with the accuracy. Having the SD Factor will allow HQ to  evaluate every Scotch Doubles player before tour stops and national events with  a deep evaluation and adjust their skill levels accordingly, as needed, before  the events.
NAPA HQ will also be using the new SD  Factor during requested audits of player skill  levels.
2021 TOURNAMENT SL  GYRATION
We  at HQ have incorporated our standard skill level formula into our standard  tournament format which will allow us to record the performances of every  player  during the tournaments they play in.
As  a result, starting January 1st, 2021, at all NAPA tour stops and national  events, players skill levels will gyrate after EVERY match they play DURING the  events, just like it does in your local league play, with the exception of the  final-four championship rounds in each event.
The  moment a score card is submitted to the NAPA tournament desk, the result of the  match will be entered into the tournament system and an updated skill level  will  be applied to both players of the match and entered into the NAPA  tournament  brackets.
So,  after every match a player plays in a NAPA tournament they can go up in skill  level or go down in skill level. They will never stay the same skill  level.
The  formula is calculated automatically by the NAPA SL formula and not by a person  or staff member.
We  hope that you will join us in embracing these new and exciting changes to the  NAPA services and we hope to see you playing Scotch Doubles and on  the Poolshooters  Tour in 2021.

I got this from NAPA today (6-6-18).  New format...Scotch Doubles!!  Sounds like fun.

The wait is over.
Today, I am proud to announce the launch of NAPA Scotch Doubles 2.0.
There are several changes that are important for you to be aware of before you begin, so kindly take the time to review the bullet points below.
1. Your standings will be available on the main NAPA web site and updated just like your other leagues are done today.

2. All scoring must be done on NAPA Play. No paper. Simply go to napaplay.com and click on Scotch Doubles to log in with your Division ID and your Captain ID just like you do with your other leagues.

3. Like in the past, teams will have a skill level. This time, however, the team skill level will change after each week's play based on the team's performance.

4. The new SD is now played in an open communication format. This is a great way to play SD and makes it lots of fun. Have you ever watched two-player beach volleyball on ESPN? The teammates are constantly shouting commands to one another. It's constant and necessary in order for them to be successful in their match. It's "team work". We see this as a great way to play SD and we think you will too.
It is important that you read the rules on this so that your players understand that the official NAPA Time Allotment rule is still in affect as well in order to keep matches from going to long.

5. There are no player requirements to play the new Scotch Doubles. Anyone can play. If you have new players that have NEVER played NAPA before you will need to set them up as new players just like you normally do.

6. Current formats for SD are 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball....and yup you guessed it....Fast 8.

7. Okay....and now the one you have all been waiting for. Substitutions.  In the past one of the biggest issues that often wrecked many of your SD leagues was player "no shows". It was a nightmare for you and a nightmare for us as well. It was just a mess. We now have a fix.
If one team member is a no show on league night, no longer does the present team member have to forfeit. They can substitute their teammate with another NAPA player of equal or lesser skill level. If the present team member can not find a NAPA substitute of equal or lower skill level, the present team member will be granted a make up match. We are making it so that the team member who DOES show up is not penalized because of an unreliable teammate.
8. Forfeits and how they can happen are clearly outlined in the new rules.

9. Max Team Skill Level --- In the current database structure all new SD divisions are set to No Limit. HOWEVER, you as the league operator can at ANY time before the session starts set a limit for your SD divisions. The new rules outline this for you and your players.

10. We are currently working on plans for adding the new Scotch Doubles as part of the Poolshooters Tour. Stay tuned for more details.

I hope that you and your players enjoy and embrace this new format. It's a lot of fun. You can begin submitting rosters today.
